In a moment of wisdom or drunken good will a few kids from my program bought a township dog on their way out of Mzoli’s two weeks ago. Gugulethu township is about 10 miles from Cape Town city center and when googled it is advertised as an up and coming tourist place with wine festivals, concerts, craft markets, and, of course, Mzoli’s Meat. This does not take away from the fact that even the locals encourage you to leave before dark and that the pup showed up extremely thin and skittish. Sadly, the townships of South Africa are still rampant with poverty, crime and gangs and not enough is being done to help the citizens of these communities.

The dog, who was named after his birthplace Gugulethu, spent a few days at my house in the care of Cat, one of my housemates. He goes by Gugs (said googs) and is incredibly well mannered, though undeniably shy. Though he is a township dog, which usually means a sort of pot-cake like my dog Dobbins, Gugs is (or at least looks a lot like) an Africanis a breed of African dog, never truly bred but developed on the continent.

Of course, neither Cat nor the kids who adopted him from the township can keep Gugs. He was listed on the South African craig’s list and was adopted yesterday by a family who lives in the area. He caused a few issues being a dog living with lots of American students in houses that aren’t supposed to have dogs, but in the end I’m glad they were so kind or so tipsy that they thought adopting a dog was a good idea. Though it is not with us, Gugs will have a better home. But I think he’ll miss Cat, when she left the house for a bit, he would go to her door and whine for her - so cute.

Hi Katie! I’m in Cape Town for one more week. I just saw off Beth, one of my housemates, and am spending a last few hours with Dani who is on an 11:30 flight tonight. I have one final left on Tuesday: Modernism. Turns out I don’t have to read Ulysses so that’s the best news since I was accepted to an institution of higher learning.

Last night we went to Signal Hill to see the sunset and this morning we went up to Rhodes Memorial for the sunrise. It was overcast this morning, but it was still beautiful. While we still had everyone from our house, we took York photos, I’ll try and get some of those up on the blog soon.

I think most I’ll miss the beautiful scenery, my housemates in York, and being somewhere different. I will not miss the lack of freedom I have here travelling by myself and at night. I’m looking forward to real pizza and ice cream, TV, Orient, but most of all, Sarah and my family.

I’ll be back in NJ on the 10th. When will you be home? An entire year without seeing you would be too much.

On Sundays tons of people descend upon Mzoli’s Meat, a braai place in Gugulethu. I finally made it there two Sundays ago to enjoy the meat and ciders with friends. Top, a shot of our table.
